Guide:Faroda's Guide to Wraithwater and Ectoplasm

Introduction

Wraithwater is a unique location in Arenum. First, it is a major gate to getting to later content. Second, it has resources that are mostly available nowhere else (with select exceptions).

Before Arriving

Before you come to Wraithwater, you should have the following:

  • Artisan Skills (Note that all services in Wraithwater require level 55 in their respective skill to use. Don’t show up expecting to get a skill up to level 55, it already has to be there)
    • Carpentry at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm logs, although at level 58 you can Repair the bank for 50 ectoplasm, which will make life significantly easier as the next closest bank is in Vastalume which is 4153 base steps away.
    • Tailoring at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm scraps, although between levels 56 through 58 you can craft Spectral handwear, Spectral breeches, and Spectral vest which give bonuses to crafting outcomes from Artisan skills
    • Crafting at level 55 to make ectoplasm tools. Level 55 will net you tools for Gathering skills, while level 58 will open up tools for Artisan skills
    • Trinketry at level 55 to make Wraithwater flower necklaces
    • Cooking at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm fish, although at level 57 you can Distill Moonshine

If you decide to show up and make a Spectral Hatchet, Pickaxe, and/or Saw, you will have to source your ectoplasm from another skill combo, most likely straight Agility via Ghost Tag. If you plan to craft a Farganite Hatchet or Pickaxe, you can only make them in Vastalume.

Your First Steps Amongst the Undead

Your priorities when you arrive should be the following:

  • Acquiring at least 50 Ectoplasm to Repair the Bank; add on another 15 Ectoplasm to make the Spectral Saw
  • Graveyard Foraging for Bones and Widow’s Kisses; you’ll need at least 5 Bones to make a Spectral Saw
  • Repairing the bank. This will make it so you don’t have to leave Wraithwater until you complete it.

One these are complete, then pick your strongest Gathering / Utility skill and equipment and grind that ectoplasm. Wraithwater is a great place to level up both skills and pets. I’ll highlight a few opportunities by skill. You should choose what your goal is during this grind: finishing it as quickly as possible (so, Work Efficiency, Double Rewards, and Double Actions), leveling up (Experience), or something else like acquiring various items (Item Finding).

General Gear Ideas

Pets

Below is my personal recommendation for what pets to equip per activity. You may disagree, particularly on the second- and third-best options. You do you, I’m not your dad. Also, while they may be recommended below, some pets are entirely unable to gain experience. They are the Dolphin (requires an Underwater location), the Reindeer (requires a Snowy location), and the Camel (requires a Desert location).

Wraithwater Pet Recommendations
Activity Recommended Pet Second Best Pet Third Best Pet
Graveyard foraging Chicken (Foraging-specific) Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up)
Ghost tag Pixie (to level up) Golden Frog (to level up) Reindeer (for Work Efficiency bonus)
Cut ectoplasm trees Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up)

Golden Frog (to level up)

Mine ectoplasm rocks Gecko (Mining-specific) Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up)
Ectoplasm slime hunting Tiger (Hunting-specific) Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up)
Ectoplasm fishing Dolphin (Fishing-specific) Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up)
Repair the bank Tortoise (to charge Shell Forge) Pixie (to level up) Golden Frog (to level up)

While doing Artisan recipes, either use the dedicated pet (Tortoise for Smithing, Pet Rock for Trinketry, Mummy for Tailoring) or use an appropriate backup, either leveling your Tortoise, Pixie, or Golden Frog, or use a Reindeer for the Work Efficiency bonus. There is no reason to use the Camel, as it provides no bonus besides some inventory space and it cannot gain experience.

Gear Thoughts

There are a number of ways to spec your gear. I’ll highlight a few ideas that work well for me.

If you are focused on a specific attribute, then you should just use something like the Walkscape Database (https://walkscapedb.com/). You can upload your current character data, and it will tell you how to maximize that attribute. Instead of going into those details, I’ll offer some alternate ideas.

Adventurers’ Guild Tokens

If you have them, this is a safe spot to try to grind the Adventurers' Guild tokens. There are five items that offer a chance to pick them up; for Wraithwater, players should strongly consider acquiring the buckler if possible, as you won’t have any other use for that gear slot anyway.

Adventurers’ Guild Gear
Item Chance to find Gear Slot Source
Adventuring buckler +1% Shield/Secondary Reward: 180 Achievement Points
Adventuring ring +0.5% Ring Adventurers' Guild chest
Adventuring amulet +1% Neck Adventurers' Guild chest
Adoring fan statue +1.5% Tool Reward: 100 Achievement Points
Cape of the trailblazer +1.5% Neck 2500 from any Outpost

Additionally, there are 11 items that have the Adventuring tool set Keyword; having multiple in your inventory will also grant a chance to pickup tokens, but you should probably save these gear slots for better equipment that will help with the ectoplasm grind. They are also too weak to help with Mining or Woodcutting in Wraithwater.

Finally, I removed the Axe of destruction from the above table; having it equipped will prevent you from equipping the required Farganite or Spectral hatchet, so it would only help for non-Woodcutting activities.

Gems

When Mining, I always wear the Rock-star amulet. The chance to pick up extra gems, and also charging the gem drop ability, outweighs any bonuses I can get for Work Efficiency, Experience, or any other attribute, but that is my personal preference. The below table digs into miscellaneous ideas like that. Also, the Spectral gear all provides a chance to find ectoplasm, which can reduce the duration of this entire grind. If you are chasing down gems for that Gem shield, here is the gear I would recommend:

Chance to Find Random Gems
Item Chance to find Gear Slot Skill/Activity Source
Zip pouch +0.5% Tool Any Trinketry chest
Gem tipped pliers +0.5% to +3% (by rarity) Tool Trinketry Crafting

These gems are any within the game, which makes these items more powerful than the regular chance to find gems, as seen on the table below.

Find Gems
Item Bonus to Find Gems Gear Slot Skill/Activity Source
Rock-star amulet +5% Neck Mining Achievement Reward: Rockstar
Amulet of bat +10% to +30% (by rarity) Neck Mining Trinketry
Gem bracelet +20% Hands Mining Achievement Reward: Infinity Stones
Hand lantern +14% Tool Mining Mining chest
Miner's shirt +13% Chest Mining Mining chest
Silver star pearl ring +4% to +10% (by rarity) Ring Mining Trinketry
Gold star pearl ring +4% to +11% (by rarity) Ring Mining Trinketry
Wholly ring +1% Ring Any Chest of the Halfling Rebels

These items will only help you find the gems on that Activity’s table. For Mine Ectoplasm Rocks, that is only the Rough star pearl and the Rough topaz

Other Drops

There are numerous other items that offer bonus to itemfinding. Some I’m skipping; the chance to find Sea shells only works in Underwater locations, so it would be pointless to go into those (except at Casbrant’s Grave, if you are interested). Additionally, by now, finding Trash items is likely well below your player level, so you are unlikely to have a need for them. I will include a few level-appropriate gear options in case you are in need of suggestions.

Other Drops
Item Effect Gear Slot Skill/Activity Source
Golden chisel +7.5% / +20% chance to find Gold nuggets Neck Carpentry/Trinketry Trinketry chest
Amulet of heron +20% chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces Neck Any Trinketry
Silver sun stone ring +0% to +25% (by rarity) chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces Ring Mining Trinketry
Gold sun stone ring +5 to +30% (by rarity) chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces Ring Mining Trinketry

Deep in the Heart of Wraithwater

Now you’ve gotten the initial tasks out of the way; you’ve made some decent gear, the bank is fixed, and you are just sort of walking to get it done. Here’s how to make the most out of your walk and make sure you don’t ever have to come back here. However, there are also a few other things you can do to grind ectoplasm and get some other things accomplished, including a little bit of backtracking to Syrenthia.

  • Achievements:
    • the Achievement: A Bone To Pick is completed by completing Graveyard Foraging five times, and crafting a Spectral Pickaxe. You’ve probably already completed this one, but I’m listing it just in case.
    • The Achievement: Spectral Specialist is completed by crafting 20 ectoplasm gear items. If not, go ahead and make a few more Wraithwater Flower Necklaces, as those don’t cost ectoplasm to make and count towards the achievement.
    • The Achievement: Pirates Of The Algatean has a large number of requirements, one of which is to craft a Spectral tool of Eternal quality.
    • The Achievement: Maid Of The Dead requires you to obtain 5000 ectoplasm. This is your final goal for Wraithwater, and once complete you can forget about this place forever.
  • Collectibles:
    • The Haunted teddy bear can be found while Graveyard Foraging. It provides +1% Work Efficiency while Tailoring. Note that Graveyard Foraging doesn’t drop ectoplasm, but having Spectral Gear will still allow you to pick some up.
    • The Charter of the drowned can be purchased for 3000 ectoplasm. This will finally let you leave and get to Stalking Yew Woods, but if you buy it as soon as you can, you’ll still be 2000 ectoplasm shy of the achievement.

The Legacy of Casbrant

Way back in Syrenthia there is a location called Casbrant's Grave. It also has the Spectral Keyword, which means all your ectoplasm gear will also help you find ectoplasm while there. I actually recommend heading back and finishing up some of the incomplete tasks back here if you are still grinding for ectoplasm. You’ll need some Diving gear Keyword, but you very likely have some already by now. As all the Activities at Casbrant’s Grave are Gathering activities, the Spectral clothes won’t have any benefit, so you are best served by wearing Diving Gear in the Chest and Leg slots, and likely the Head slot (as opposed to the Oxygen Tank, which competes for the Back slot that the Ghost Trap Pack uses).

Casbrant’s Grave Activities
Activity Important Drops Spectral Tool
Sea fishing (Spear) Eye patch Spectral fishing cagespear
Wreck diving Pirate hat; Dinglehopper

While grinding for these items, you may also gain Sea shells, which will allow you to purchase a Swashbuckler sword. This sword not only grants you bonuses to Fishing and Foraging, but also takes up the Primary gear slot, which no other item is competing for. Additionally, the Eye Patch, Pirate Hat, and Swashbuckler Sword all are required for the above mentioned Achievement: Pirates Of The Algatean.

The primary drawback of this strategy is that the closest bank to Casbrant’s Grave is in Vastalume (1326 base steps away), meaning you may have some runs to the bank as your inventory fills up.

The Finish Line

By the time you leave, you should have completed all the above tasks. However, you should keep in mind what you will be up against next. Below is where your skills should be at by the time you move on, which would allow you to begin completing activities or recipes once you acquire the resources.

  • Artisan Skills
    • Carpentry at level 60 to process your Yew logs. The highest Carpentry recipe in the game right now requires level 70
    • Trinketry at level 57 to make Gold ethernite rings
    • Cooking at level 60 to process your Raw moray you’ll get from Isthmus sea fishing. The highest Cooking recipe in the game right now requires level 63
    • Tailoring at level 60 to process your Ironweed into Tough linen cloth. The highest Tailoring recipe in the game right now requires level 61
    • Crafting at level 60 to make adamant tools. The highest Crafting recipe in the game right now requires level 70

Well, that's all, folks! As the game expands I'll try to come back to keep this up to date.
