Being overencumbered only slows down your activities, but doesn't affect travel.
Guide:Faroda's Guide to Wraithwater and Ectoplasm
Introduction
Hello! I'm Faroda, and I've made this guide in order to better focus my own efforts on the Wraithwater grind, particularly as we inch towards the full release. I hope it can be useful to you as well. I’ll do my level best to keep it updated if there are any changes to Wraithwater as the game expands.
Wraithwater is a unique location in Arenum. First, it is a major gate to getting to later content. Second, it has resources that are mostly available nowhere else (with select exceptions); while the equipment you’ll make here does have a few bonuses tied to Ectoplasm and Spectral locations, they also have some pretty solid attributes that aren’t tied to Wraithwater and can be effective while you harvest the next level of resources. You’ll have an excess of resources, so it may be worth it to strive for
,
, or even
quality items. You’ll need at least one
quality item regardless for one of the Achievements described in my “Deep in the Heart of Wraithwater” section below.
Finally, there are actually two Keywords that are tied to Wraithwater. The Spectral Keyword is an Item-based keyword, similar to the way we have
Diving Gear,
Aquatic Keyword items, or
Light source Keyword items. The
Ghostly Keyword is a Location-based keyword, similar to the way we have
Snowy Keyword,
Underwater Keyword, and
Desert Keyword locations. For the entirety of this guide, I use both Spectral and Ghostly synonymously and default to Spectral; Spectral items only work at Ghostly locations, just like how Aquatic items only work at Underwater locations, so there is no functional need to go back and forth between them, and using a single term makes it easier for folks just waltzing into Wraithwater.
Before Arriving
Before you come to Wraithwater, you should have the following:
- Utility and Gathering Skills (short answer: level 55 in each)
Foraging at level 55 to do
Graveyard foraging and get
Bones and
Widow's kisses
Agility at level 55 to play
Ghost tag, which drops
Ectoplasm
Woodcutting at level 55 to
Cut ectoplasm trees. You’ll also need any
Hatchet that requires a Woodcutting level of 50 (so a Farganite hatchet or Spectral hatchet, or a Trellin beaver; if you are just coming back for achievements, then Adamantite and Violite also work).
Mining at level 55 to
Mine ectoplasm rocks. You’ll also need any
Pickaxe that requires a Mining level of 50 (so a Farganite pickaxe or Spectral pickaxe; if you are just coming back for achievements, then Adamantite and Violite also work).
Fishing at level 55 to go
Ectoplasm fishing. You’ll also need any
Fishing tool Keyword.
Hunting at level 55 to go
Ectoplasm slime hunting. You’ll also need any
Hunting bow Keyword, as well as
Arrows Keyword
- Artisan Skills (Short answer: level 55 in everything minimum to use any services and craft Gathering tools, but level 58 recommended to craft the Artisan skill tools)
Carpentry at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm logs, although at level 58 you can craft a
Spectral saw, and also to
Repair the bank for 50 ectoplasm, which will make life significantly easier as the next closest bank is in
Vastalume which is 4153 base steps away.
Tailoring at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm scraps, although between levels 56 through 58 you can craft Spectral handwear, Spectral breeches, and Spectral vest which give bonuses to crafting outcomes from Artisan skills
Crafting at level 55 to make ectoplasm tools. Level 55 will net you tools for Gathering skills, while level 58 will open up tools for Artisan skills
Trinketry at level 55 to make Wraithwater flower necklaces
Cooking at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm fish, although at level 57 you can Distill
Moonshine
Smithing at level 55 to process your Ectoplasm rocks
If you decide to show up and make a Spectral Hatchet, Pickaxe, and/or Saw, you will have to source your ectoplasm from another skill combo, most likely straight Agility via Ghost Tag. If you plan to craft a Farganite Hatchet or Pickaxe, the only other location you can make them is Vastalume.
Your First Steps Amongst the Undead
Your priorities when you arrive should be the following:
Graveyard foraging for
Bones and
Widow's kisses; you’ll need at least 5 Bones to make a Spectral Saw, but you can just go ahead and do it five to ten times so you have your 5 Bones, plus another two Bones and two Widow’s Kisses to make a Wraithwater flower necklace (or multiple to try to improve the Ectoplasm drop rate)
- Acquiring 15 Ectoplasm to make the Spectral Saw; reminder that you’ll need level 58 Crafting to make this
- Acquiring 50 Ectoplasm to Repair the Bank; reminder that you’ll need level 58 Carpentry to complete this, and the Spectral Saw mentioned above
- Repair the bank. This will make it so you don’t have to leave Wraithwater until you complete it
One these are complete, then pick your strongest Gathering / Utility skill and equipment and grind that Ectoplasm, Bones, and Widow’s Kisses. Wraithwater is also a great place to level up both skills and pets. I’ll highlight a few opportunities by skill. You should choose what your goal is during this grind: finishing it as quickly as possible (so, Work Efficiency, Double Rewards, and Double Actions), leveling up (Experience), or something else like acquiring various items (Item Finding).
General Gear Ideas
I’ll start by discussing Spectral gear which is made with Ectoplasm, and then go into some other options while you build up to them.
About Spectral Items
Spectral items come in two categories: tools and gear. The Ectoplasm page goes into the recipes, but the short of it is that Gathering skill tools require three
Bones and ten
Ectoplasm each, while the
Artisan skill tools require five
Bones and fifteen
Ectoplasm each. However, you should be more focused on the other attributes of the gear.
Note that the range of chances to drop ectoplasm on the table below may say 0% to X%; that’s because at Common quality, it provides no bonus. Also, all Cursed services at Wraithwater have penalties to use it, but you cannot process ectoplasm anywhere else. The minimum rarity to overcome service penalties shows how to get to at least a net zero with only the item (not including step penalties), it doesn’t factor in other equipment, being overleveled, or other ways to improve attributes, so don’t be discouraged with the rarity listed; some things you are just going to have to eat the penalty, especially at the beginning, and others you can overcome with all the other gear and tools you have access to by now. Finally, there is no gear that is just focused on Agility; therefore, while playing Ghost tag you are largely stuck with non-Spectral items, but you don’t have to process anything, it drops Ectoplasm directly.
The Spectral tools that you can acquire (all via Crafting) are listed below. Also, note that these have their ability to find Ectoplasm active even if you aren’t doing the specific activity or recipe associated with that skill! So if you happen to craft a very powerful Chisel, you can use it for all activities and recipes, not just Crafting and Trinketry.
The Spectral Gear that you can Tailor, Trinket, or gain via Achievement are listed below. Please note that the Tailored clothes only works with Artisan skills, while the necklace and Ghost pack worth with every activity and recipe:
| Item | Chance to drop Ectoplasm | Source | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| +5% to +15% | |||
| +5% to +15% | |||
| +5% to +15% | |||
| +0% to +19% | |||
| +0% to +20% | Achievement: |
Pets
Below is my personal recommendation for what pets to equip per activity. You may disagree, particularly on the second- and third-best options. You do you, I’m not your dad. Also, while they may be recommended below, some pets are entirely unable to gain experience. They are the Dolphin (requires an Underwater location), the Reindeer (requires a Snowy location), and the Camel (requires a Desert location).
| Activity | Recommended Pet | Second Best Pet | Third Best Pet |
|---|---|---|---|
|
| |||
While doing Artisan recipes, either use the dedicated pet (Tortoise for Smithing, Pet Rock for Trinketry, Mummy for Tailoring) or use an appropriate backup, either leveling your Tortoise, Pixie, or Golden Frog, or use a Reindeer for the Work Efficiency bonus. There is no reason to use the Camel, as it provides no bonus besides some inventory space and it cannot gain experience.
Other Gear Thoughts
There are a number of ways to spec your gear. I’ll highlight a few ideas that work well for me.
If you are focused on a specific attribute, then you should just use something like the Walkscape Database (https://walkscapedb.com/). You can upload your current character data, and it will tell you how to maximize that attribute. Instead of going into those details, I’ll offer some alternate ideas.
Adventurers’ Guild Tokens
If you have them, this is a safe spot to try to grind the Adventurers' Guild tokens. There are five items that offer a chance to pick them up; for Wraithwater, players should strongly consider acquiring the buckler if possible, as you won’t have any other use for that gear slot anyway.
| Item | Chance to find |
Gear Slot | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| +1% | Shield/Secondary | Reward: 180 | |
| +0.5% | Ring | ||
| +1% | Neck | ||
| +1.5% | Tool | Reward: 100 | |
| +1.5% | Neck | 2500 |
Additionally, there are 11 items that have the Adventuring tool set Keyword; having multiple in your inventory will also grant a chance to pickup tokens, but you should probably save these gear slots for better equipment that will help with the ectoplasm grind. They are also too weak to help with Mining or Woodcutting in Wraithwater.
Finally, I removed the Axe of destruction from the above table; having it equipped will prevent you from equipping the required Farganite or Spectral hatchet, so it would only help for non-Woodcutting activities.
Gems
When Mining, I always wear the Rock-star amulet. The chance to pick up extra gems, and also charging the gem drop ability, outweighs any bonuses I can get for Work Efficiency, Experience, or any other attribute, but that is my personal preference. The below table digs into miscellaneous ideas like that. Also, the Spectral gear all provides a chance to find ectoplasm, which can reduce the duration of this entire grind. If you are chasing down gems for that Gem shield, here is the gear I would recommend:
| Item | Chance to find |
Gear Slot | Skill/Activity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +0.5% | Tool | Any | ||
| +0.5% to +3% (by rarity) | Tool | Trinketry | Crafting |
These gems are any within the game, which makes these items more powerful than the regular chance to find gems, as seen on the table below.
| Item | Bonus to Find Gems | Gear Slot | Skill/Activity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +5% | Neck | Mining | Achievement Reward: Rockstar | |
| +10% to +30% (by rarity) | Neck | Mining | Trinketry | |
| +20% | Hands | Mining | Achievement Reward: Infinity Stones | |
| +14% | Tool | Mining | ||
| +13% | Chest | Mining | ||
| +4% to +10% (by rarity) | Ring | Mining | Trinketry | |
| +4% to +11% (by rarity) | Ring | Mining | Trinketry | |
| +1% | Ring | Any |
These items will only help you find the gems on that Activity’s table. For Mine Ectoplasm Rocks, that is only the Rough star pearl and the
Rough topaz
Miscellaneous Other Drops
There are numerous other items that offer bonus to itemfinding. Some I’m skipping; the chance to find Sea shells only works in Underwater locations, so it would be pointless to go into those (except at Casbrant’s Grave, if you are interested). Additionally, by now, finding Trash items is likely well below your player level, so you are unlikely to have a need for them. I will include a few level-appropriate gear options in case you are in need of suggestions.
| Item | Effect | Gear Slot | Skill/Activity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +7.5% / +20% chance to find Gold nuggets | Neck | Carpentry/Trinketry | ||
| +20% chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces | Neck | Any | Trinketry | |
| +0% to +25% (by rarity) chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces | Ring | Mining | Trinketry | |
| +5 to +30% (by rarity) chance to find 1 to 10 Gold pieces | Ring | Mining | Trinketry |
Deep in the Heart of Wraithwater
Now you’ve gotten the initial tasks out of the way; you’ve made some decent gear, the bank is fixed, and you are just sort of walking to get it done. Here’s how to make the most out of your walk and make sure you don’t ever have to come back here. However, there are also a few other things you can do to grind ectoplasm and get some other things accomplished, including a little bit of backtracking to Syrenthia.
- Achievements:
- the Achievement:
A Bone To Pick is completed by completing Graveyard Foraging five times, and crafting a Spectral Pickaxe. You’ve probably already completed this one, but I’m listing it just in case.
- The reward is 100 ectoplasm, and three
Achievement Points.
- The reward is 100 ectoplasm, and three
- The Achievement:
Spectral Specialist is completed by crafting 20 ectoplasm gear items. If not, go ahead and make a few more Wraithwater Flower Necklaces, as those don’t cost ectoplasm to make and count towards the achievement.
- The reward is the
Ghost trap pack, which is the only Spectral item that takes up the Back slot, and three
Achievement Points
- The reward is the
- The Achievement:
Pirates Of The Algatean has a large number of requirements, one of which is to craft a Spectral tool of Eternal quality.
- It rewards some cosmetics, and ten
Achievement Points

- The Achievement:
Maid Of The Dead requires you to obtain 5000 ectoplasm. This is your final goal for Wraithwater, and once complete you can forget about this place forever. You can absolutely spend the ectoplasm to make gear and buy the below Charter, you don’t need to have a single stockpile of 5000 ectoplasm.
- It rewards some cosmetics, and five

- the Achievement:
- Collectibles:
- The
Haunted teddy bear can be found while Graveyard Foraging. It provides +1% Work Efficiency while Tailoring. Note that Graveyard Foraging doesn’t drop ectoplasm, but having Spectral Gear will still allow you to pick some up.
- The
Charter of the drowned can be purchased for 3000 ectoplasm. This will finally let you leave and get to
Stalking Yew Woods, but if you buy it as soon as you can, you’ll still be 2000 ectoplasm shy of the achievement.
- The
The Legacy of Casbrant
Way back in Syrenthia there is a location called Casbrant's Grave. It also has the
Ghostly Keyword, which means all your ectoplasm gear will also help you find ectoplasm while there. I actually recommend heading back and finishing up some of the incomplete tasks back here if you are still grinding for ectoplasm. You’ll need some Diving gear Keyword, but you very likely have some already by now. As all the Activities at Casbrant’s Grave are Gathering activities, the Spectral clothes won’t have any benefit, so you are best served by wearing Diving Gear in the Chest and Leg slots, and likely the Head slot (as opposed to the Oxygen Tank, which competes for the Back slot that the Ghost Trap Pack uses). You can decide to either gear spec for ectoplasm, for seashells, collectibles, or whatever else you want, but the Spectral tools listed below are the most efficient way to leverage gathering tools for that specific activity.
| Activity | Important Drops | Spectral Tool |
|---|---|---|
While grinding for these items, you may also gain Sea shells, which will allow you to purchase a
Swashbuckler sword. This sword not only grants you bonuses to Fishing and Foraging, but also takes up the Primary gear slot, which no other item is competing for. Additionally, the Eye Patch, Pirate Hat, and Swashbuckler Sword all are required for the above mentioned Achievement: Pirates Of The Algatean.
The primary drawback of this strategy is that the closest bank to Casbrant’s Grave is in Vastalume (1326 base steps away), meaning you may have some runs to the bank as your inventory fills up. It also requires you to invest some gear slots into Diving Gear, but that is just how Syrenthia works with its Underwater Keyword locations. If you have any questions about Diving Gear, I have a guide at the very bottom of this page.
The Finish Line
By the time you leave, you should have completed all the above tasks. However, you should keep in mind what you will be up against next. Below is where your skills should be at by the time you move on, which would allow you to begin completing activities or recipes once you acquire the resources.
