From The Walkscape Walkthrough
The Smithing skill allows you to smelt ores into bars as well as create different types of combat armor. With higher Smithing levels, you’ll have access to more ores, be able to create better armors, and use special skilling gear that can boost your smithing efficiency. You can also receive smithing chests as a rare drop from training this skill.

The following activities are through recipies and thus require materials in order to complete.
Additionally they may have Service Requirements, usually in the form of Refinement Stations.
The following activities are eligible to drop Smithing Chests.
