Gathering Early Trinketry Materials

Trinketry, Walkscape's newest skill, is meant to be a very slow skill to gather resources for and train. Until level 40 (which unlocks Antique Market Assessing) the only current training you can do is the loop of gathering silver/gold/gems and forming trinkets out of them. This guide looks at the two main activities for getting silver/gold, Gold Panning and Wreck Diving, and outlines why I choose Gold Panning over Wreck Diving for early Trinketry levels.

Notes before we begin

Some notes on the content of this guide:

  • This is heavily dependent on your specific gear and levels; your mileage will vary depending on where you are in Walkscape's progression.
  • As of writing, the exact drop rates for nuggets and gems aren't known. This is based on estimates from drop rate data reported by the Walkscape community, but sample sizes are limited.
  • This focuses on activities for gathering Trinketry materials. Smelting bars also produces nuggets (at an unknown rate) but is not considered here.
  • This does not take into account NMC/DR procs on Smithing/Trinketry transformations
  • This does not take into account Fines and the increased experience from crafting with those
  • When talking about exp/step rates, this only focuses on the steps spent gathering the materials -- not processing them.

Trinketry Experience Rates

Let's establish some baseline experience rates for the Trinketry materials we're processing.

  • Cutting Opal: 45 exp
  • Cutting Star Pearl: 60 exp
  • Silver Ring: 100 exp (14 nuggets per silver ring)
  • Gold Ring: 150 exp (14 nuggets per gold ring)

Combining a gem and a silver/gold bar will produce significantly more exp per nugget, but requires you to be able to upkeep your gem find; for simplicity, this guide just assumes all nuggets will be used for plain rings.

Wreck Diving

Wreck Diving is a Foraging activity that produces shells and silver/gold nuggets.

Wreck Diving's Trinketry drop rates are still unknown, but seem to be approximately average out to:

  • 1 gold nugget every reward roll
  • 3 silver nuggets every reward roll

Wreck Diving also drops Gem Pouches, which rolls the gem table 4 times, at a base rate of 1/250 -- or about 1 gem every 62.5 reward rolls. (Note that solid chest find % gear can bring this down significantly, but you'll still likely be around 1 gem every 30 reward rolls -- not enough to heavily influence the Trinketry experience rates one way or the other, but there may be significant value in being able to roll the whole gem table).

With this gear set (TODO gear set link) at level 55+, you get a reward roll every ~410 steps. In 10,000 steps (24 completions), we would get:

  • 24 gold nuggets
  • 72 silver nuggets

Using the baseline experience rates outlined above, this equates to:

  • 257 Trinketry exp from Gold Rings
  • 514 Trinketry exp from Silver Rings

All told, this is about 771 Trinketry exp per 10,000 steps. With an occasional gem drop allowing you to make higher-value jewelry, this number will be bumped up slightly, but in general nuggets will drastically outpace gems.

Gold Panning

Gold Panning is a Mining activity that produces various ores, silver/gold nuggets, and rough Opals/Star Pearls.

Gold Panning's Trinketry drop rates are still unknown, but seem to be approximately:

  • 1 gold nugget every 10 reward rolls
  • 1 silver nugget every 10 reward rolls
  • 1 rough Opal every 66 reward rolls
  • 1 rough Star Pearl every ?? reward rolls (possibly ~217 but too small of a sample size to be sure)

With this gear set (TODO gear set link) at level 35+, you get a reward roll every ~30.5 steps. In 10,000 steps (327 completions), we would get:

  • ~33 gold nuggets
  • ~33 silver nuggets
  • ~5 rough Opals (note: this doesn't factor in gem find from the gear; at +62% we might expect as many as 8 Opals instead)
  • ~1-2 rough Star Pearls

Using the baseline experience rates outlined above, this equates to:

  • 353 Trinketry exp from Gold Rings
  • 235 Trinketry exp from Silver Rings
  • 225 Trinketry exp from cutting Opals
  • ~60-120 Trinketry exp from cutting Star Pearls.

All told, this nets about 873 - 933 Trinketry exp per 10,000 steps. With Gold Panning, as with Wreck Driving, nuggets will generally outpace gems. However, Gold Panning should drop gems at a sufficient rate to be able to spend a decent chunk of your nuggets on gem jewelry -- significantly boosting the overall exp/nugget and exp/10,000 steps.

Choosing An Activity

This isn't a black and white decision! There are good reasons to choose either activity.

You might choose Wreck Diving if:

  • You value the Gem Pouch rolls/the ability to stockpile late-Trinketry gems
  • You value Silver nuggets/rings (which have Fine Mat %) over Gold nuggets/rings (which have Chest Find %)
  • You value the shells/Pirate Hat/Dinglehopper drop that you also might get
  • You want something extremely AFK that you can sink steps into for days/weeks at a time without running out of inventory
  • You want something close to Vastalume for farming Syrenthia jobs
  • You specifically want Agility/Coral/Foraging Chests (~54000 steps/chest)
  • You specifically want Agility/Foraging exp, or an activity that is > 1 exp per step

You might choose Gold Panning if:

  • You value the (potentially) higher early-Trinketry experience rates/you're trying to rush level 40
  • You want to be able to make Opal/Star Pearl rings, rather than just plain silver/gold rings
  • You value the ore or Old rings drops
  • You want to make progress on the Rockstar (10,000 ore mined) or Ooh, Shinier! (find a Fine Star Pearl) achievement
  • You specifically want Fishing/Mining Chests (~4750 steps/chest) or exp
  • You want to grind Adventure Tokens (~1525 steps/token)
