You can get a Gem Shield before you ever leave Jarvonia. You will need the following by the end, but several of these will build up your skills as you go:
*200 Adventurer's Guild Tokens (bypassable but you will have to leave Jarvonia via Syrenthia or 4,500 coins to get to GDTE and Wallisia) to access an Advanced Forge
*Fishing Level 5 (bypassable by Trinketry Chests)
*Trinketry Level 34
*Agility Level 50 (bypassable by Trinketry Chests, but not worth it)
*100 Tokens (for a Black Eye Peak Wilderness Permit) (can be bypassed by getting Farganite Ore from Mining or Smithing Chests, but you will still need access to a Trinketry Bench and Winter’s End requires the Permit)
*100 Tokens (for a Mysterious Northern Map) (can by bypassed but you will have to travel to Wraithwater in Wallisia, and this will require a Jarvonian Letter of Passage which costs 4,500 coins)
Skills:
*Mining Level 30 (for Activity: Mine Coal) (can be bypassed by drops from Mining Chests and Smithing Chests))
*Mining Level 50 (for Activity: Mine Farganite Ore to get Farganite Ore (can be bypassed by drops from Mining and Smithing Chests))
*Mining Level 50 / Agility Level 50 (for Activity: Spelunking to get Gem Pouches (can be bypassed by drops from Trinketry Chests))
*Trinketry Level 34 (to Shape a Sun Stone; other gems are shaped at lower levels)
*Smithing Level 15 (to Smelt a Gold Bar from Gold Nuggets at any Smithing Forge (can be bypassed by drops from Trinketry Chests))
*Smithing Level 50 (to Smelt a Farganite Bar from two Coal and one Farganite Ore)
*Smithing Level 59 (to Smith a Gem Shield)

You will also need one of each of the following Gems, which can be acquired in Rough Gem form either by Gem Pouches (Activity: Spelunking) or Trinketry Chests.
*Wrentmarine (Shape a wrentmarine requires a Trinketry Bench and Trinketry Level 15)
*Topaz (Shape a topaz requires a Trinketry Bench and Trinketry Level 21)
*Jade (Shape a Jade requires a Trinketry Bench and Trinketry Level 26)
*Ruby (Shape a Ruby requires a Trinketry Bench and Trinketry Level 30)
*Sun Stone (Shape a Sun Stone requires a Trinketry Bench and Trinketry Level 34)

The benefit is that a Gem Shield counts as a Light Source and increases Work Efficiency while doing Agility activities; this will open up Tool, Ring, or Helmet slots when doing several activities in the future, particularly as some require multiple Light Sources. Also, no other shield provides a bonus, so there is no competition for this gear slot.

This is NOT the most efficient method to craft a Gem Shield in the game, but it is a way you can do it very early, and often using resources you acquired by doing other activities while finishing up Jarvonia prior to moving on to GDTE or Syrenthia.

Faroda: An easy-to-read guide on how to acquire and use Diving Gear

Diving Gear is required to visit any location in Syrenthia, as well as Bog Bottom in GDTE. It comes in three tiers: Diving Gear, Advanced Diving Gear, and Expert Diving Gear.

Diving Gear
*Rusty Diving Helmet can be purchased at Port Skildar in Jarvonia for 500 gold and requires Agility Level 20
*Rusty Diving Torso can be purchased at Horn of Respite in Jarvonia for 20 Adventurer's Guild Tokens and requires Agility Level 20
*Rusty Diving Leggings can be found in Sunken Chests, which are found via fishing; it has a 59.04% drop rate from the chests and requires Agility Level 20
*Merfolk Shell Coverings can be found in Chests of Syrenthia, which can only be earned once you are already in Syrenthia; it has a 34.39% drop rate per chest and requires 1 Syrenthia Faction reputation

Advanced Diving Gear
*Kelp Diving Mask is crafted from two Hardened Kelp, which itself is crafted from two Kelp; you'll need Cooking Level 35 to make the Hardened Kelp and Tailoring Level 25 to create the mask and requires Agility Level 30 to wear
*Kelp Diving Pants is crafted from two Hardened Kelp; you'll need Tailoring Level 26 to create it and requires Agility Level 30
*Kelp Diving Shirt is crafted from two Hardened Kelp; you'll need Tailoring Level 27 to create it and requires Agility Level 30
*Merfolk Dress is dropped from Activity: Merfolk Dancing in Vastalume with a 0.196% base drop chance and required at Agility Level 40
*Merfolk Dance Skirt can be found in Chests of Syrenthia; it has a 4.907% drop rate per chest and requires 30 Syrenthia Faction reputation

Expert Diving Gear
*Hydrilium Diving Helm is crafted from two Hydrilium, which itself required Hardened Kelp and Volcanic Rock (and therefore Cooking Level 35, Mining Level 45, and Crafting Level 45) and requires the player to have completed Underwater Swimming 25 times (which itself required Agility Level 50 and three Advanced Diving Gear)
*Hydrilium Diving Leggings is crafted from two Hydrilium, and requires the player to have completed Underwater Swimming 25 times
*Hydrilium Diving Torso is crafted from two Hydrilium, and requires the player to have completed Underwater Swimming 25 times
*Merfolk Dance Corslet can be found in Chests of Syrenthia; it has a 1.492% drop rate and requires 60 Syrenthia Faction reputation
*Merfolk Dance Circlet can be found in Chests of Syrenthia; it has a 0.399% drop rate and required 100 Syrenthia Faction reputation
*Tentacle Crown is acquired through an unrevealed process.
*Oxygen Tank is a Syrenthia Faction reward once the player has 10 Syrenthia Faction reputation

While all of Syrenthia requires at least the basic Diving Gear, the following requires more advanced levels:
*Underwater Swimming at Elara's Lagoon requires three Advanced Diving Gear pieces (and Agility Level 50)
*Underwater Cave travel requires three Advanced Diving Gear pieces; all Activities require Expert Diving Gear as well
*Darktide Trench travel requires three Expert Diving Gear; all Activities require Expert Diving Gear as well
*Bog Bottom in GDTE requires three Advanced Diving Gear; all activities require Advanced Diving Gear as well

The Oxygen Tank is the only Tool that is also a piece of Diving Gear; all others occupy Head, Chest, or Leg slots. There are two ways to increase Syrenthia Faction reputation: completing Jobs at the Vastalume Job Board or completing Merfolk Dancing which gains 0.01 reputation per completed Activity and requires 30 Agility. Merfolk Dancing is also the source for the Merfolk Dress, the Letter from A.A. collectible, and one of two sources for a Dolphin Egg (which provides bonuses for Fishing activities).

Faroda: Faroda's Guide to Ectoplasm

Wraithwater has specific requirements you must do before you can proceed with the rest of the game, all tied to Ectoplasm.

Before you come to Wraithwater, you should have the following:
*The following Skills at Level 55:
# Foraging (to do Graveyard Foraging and get Bones and Widow’s Kisses)
# Woodcutting (to Cut Ectoplasm Trees)
# Carpentry (to Cut Ectoplasm Logs into Ectoplasm)
*The following Equipment
# A Hatchet that requires at least 50 Woodcutting (a Farganite Hatchet, or a Trellin Beaver; you can make a Farganite Hatchet or Spectral Hatchet on-site, but will need the ingredients without using Woodcutting and at least Crafting Level 55 for Spectral). The only alternate location to craft Farganite Hatchets or Pickaxes is Vastalume, which requires three Basic Diving Gear (or Advanced or Expert Diving Gear).

Alternatively, you can do any combination of the following Utility or Gathering/Artisan skills at Level 55, with some limitations:
*Agility (to do Activity: Ghost Tag)
*Mining/Smithing (will require a Farganite Pickaxe, or to Craft a Spectral Pickaxe on-site)
*Fishing/Cooking (any Fishing Tool will do, there is no specific requirement between Rods, Spears, Nets, and Spears)
*Hunting/Tailoring (with any Hunting Bow and Arrows, but this will consume Arrows)

Your priorities when you arrive should be the following:
*Graveyard Foraging for Bones and Widow’s Kisses; you’ll need at least 23-100 Bones for one achievement, depending on what you craft and at minimum 2 Widow’s Kiss flowers; that is the absolute minimum (Bones can be acquired from Hunting in other locations as well)
*Acquiring at least 50 Ectoplasm to Repair the Bank
*Crafting both a Spectral Pickaxe (requires Crafting Level 55) and a Spectral Saw (requires Crafting Level 58)

While transforming base materials into Ectoplasm only requires Artisan skills to be at Level 55, crafting all the Spectral Gear and Repairing the Bank requires Carpentry, Crafting, and Tailoring to be at Level 58 (only one is used for a given task, this is to be able to do everything before you leave).

Once you have the Bank repaired, you can focus on getting up to 5000 Ectoplasm for the final Achievement, 3000 of which will be spent to buy the Charter of the Drowned, which is the only way to progress deeper into Wallisia and further on to Wrentmark.

Once you’ve crafted 20 Spectral items (not including Moonshine, a consumable), you will receive the Ghost Pack Trap, which has a 5% chance to find Ectoplasm when doing an activity in a Ghostly location (which is currently only Wraithwater itself and Casbrant’s Grave in Syrenthia). Two of those 20 items should be a Spectral Pickaxe and a Spectral Saw, if possible, but it would benefit you to also Tailor the Spectral vestments: a Spectral Vest (chest), Spectral Breeches (legs), and Spectral Handwear (hands). These will give a combined 45% chance to find Ectoplasm while using Artisan Skills in Spectral locations if at Eternal Quality, so refining Ectoplasm Fish, Ore, Logs, and Scraps will net you additional Ectoplasm. However, this gear requires that you have a total Artisan Level of 323 combined across Carpentry, Cooking, Crafting, Smithing, and Tailoring; this is an average of Level 65 in each. Leveling up your Artisan skills is the third best use of Ectoplasm behind Repairing the Bank and buying the Charter of the Drowned.

Once you are happy with what gear you have and the levels of your Gathering skills (recommended Agility and Fishing Level 60, and Mining Level 70), you can switch long-term to Graveyard Foraging; doing this five times is also tied to an Achievement, and the Haunted Teddy Bear collectible can be found which provides a permanent +1% Work Efficiency while doing Tailoring. You will also be set up to complete all the follow-on activities in Wallisia and Wrentmark.

Finally, the Ghost Trap Pack, Wraithwater Flower Necklace, and either the Spectral Fishing Cagespear or the Spectral Sickle provide bonuses to activities at Casbrant’s Grave (the Cagespear for Sea Fishing (Spear) and the Sickle for Wreck Diving) and will also trigger the chance to find Ectoplasm, and Eternal qualities provide significant bonuses to Work Efficiency, Chest Finding, and other activities. These can help find the Pirate items to complete the Pirates of the Algatean achievement, but do not assist in Find Collectibles for the Dinglehopper you can find at Wreck Diving (the only Foraging Tools that provide bonuses to Find Collectibles are the the Dull Machete, Sharp Machete, and Adventuring Sickle).
